Arthouse films from around the world out now

This year at the Sundance Festival, to celebrate the 40th edition of the event in the U.S. and the 11th edition in London 11 feature films were chosen to premiere from the 6-9 June 2024.

Sundance Film Festival  celebrated independent cinema with an array of films from around the world.

The festival opened with Rich Peppiatt’s funny and likable, Kneecap and closed with Didi directed by Sean Wang.

Sasquatch Sunset by directors David and Nathan Zellner

From the misty, dense forests of North America a family of Sasquatches can be found hiding  among the trees. The last of their species, they start a funny, epic journey in fighting for their survival. The giant big-foots struggle to understand the changes in their forest and in the world that they inhabit.

Kneecap is about an Irish rap group called Kneecap in Northern Ireland. Its a real story about a rap trio from Belfast became leaders and contributors of a civil rights movement to save their Irish language.

Rob Peace by Chiwetel Ejiofor, and adaptation of Jeff hobbs’ bestselling biography.

Rob Peace is based on Jeff Hobb’s bestelling work of non-fiction. Its a biography about his life in Newark as a struggling student who later graduates from Yale University. He becomes an recognised scholar in molecular biophysics and biochemisry but suffers an injustice as his father is wrongly imprisoned for murder.

Your Monster, a monster rom-com a debut by Caroline Lindy.

Laura Franco is an actress who suffers a break-down but finds herself again after she meets, as they say… the monster in her closet.

My Old Ass about Megan Park’s coming-of-age angst starring Maisy Stella (Nashville) and Aubrey Plaza (Emily the Criminal).

Elliott (Maisey Stella) tries a magic mushroom and has an unexpecting trip when she gets high on her 18th birthday. She meets her wiser and funny older self at 39 years old, (Aubrey Plaza). Elliott’s “old ass” warns her about the dos and don’ts for her the younger version of herself she realises that she may have taken her family and love for granted.

Girls Will Be Girls by Shuchi Talati, winner of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award.

Set in the Himalayas, it tells the story of Mira a 16 year ikd at boarding school who falls in love. She experiences a sexual rebellious awakening which her mother misunderstands. It explores the difficulties and angst of growing up and family life.

Handling the Undead, a disturbing horror zombie film by Thea Hvistedahl.

Set in Oslo in the Summer, suddenly an electric shock electrifies the city. The city descends into chaos and destruction with TVs and electronics which affect its residents, particularly three families, Mahler and his daughter. Its a story about family and loss.

Didi, written and directed by Sean Wang, Didi is set in 2008, in the California Bay Area. It’s a funny story about first generation teenagers as they find their way through their adolescence.

In this true story, a dare-devil couple travel across the world to climb the world’s largest skyscraper. A gripping film of acrobatics and life or death.

Never Look Away, a debut by director Lucy Lawlesss.

Never Look Away is a true story about a brave CNN camera woman Margaret Moth. Margaret is an award-winning hournalist, inspirational and courageous she tells the story of her experiences in conflicts and war zones across the world. It’s a tense biography about a strong-spirited  activist and determined woman who is recognised for capturing catastrophic events with her camera and photography.
